Aspen Acres Fire Community Update

The YMCA of Pueblo continues to support individuals and families affected by the Aspen Acres Fire. Our facility remains open as a free respite center for those who have been evacuated or displaced.

Guests are welcome to use our showers, restrooms, drinking water, air-conditioned spaces, Wi-Fi, and device-charging stations. Family-friendly activities and comfortable spaces to rest are also available. Parents and guardians must remain with their children. Please bring proof of evacuation or displacement.

School Supply Drive: July 29–August 12

We are also collecting school supplies for students in the Rye and Greenhorn Valley communities. Pueblo County School District 70 shared that approximately 25% of the area’s 561 students were significantly affected by the fire.

Most-needed items include:

New backpacks
Pencil bags or pencil boxes
Folders and notebook paper
Crayons, pencils and glue sticks
Boxes of tissues
Clorox disinfecting wipes
New youth-sized hoodies and sweatshirts

Donations may be dropped off at the YMCA of Pueblo Front Desk during regular operating hours.

Praesidium Accredited

The YMCA of Pueblo has been awarded the highest honor for abuse prevention practices by Praesidium. This accreditation reaffirms the YMCA’s unwavering commitment to creating a safe and nurturing environment for all members, staff, and program participants. Praesidium specializes in preventing sexual abuse in organizations that serve youth and vulnerable adults. Pursuing Praesidium Accreditation creates a pathway to align the organization’s mission and values with best practices in abuse prevention. This also gives organizations written resources to strengthen prevention efforts, and consultation with Praesidium experts.

The YMCA of Pueblo is one of the first 30 Y’s in the country to receive this accreditation, and the first in the state of Colorado to receive it. The accreditation process consisted of a seven month process. Starting with a thorough review of the policies and procedures, an onsite inspection of operations, and then full implementation. The Praesidium Accreditation is renewed every three years. The YMCA of Pueblo continues to uphold its mission of promoting youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. The Praesidium Accreditation demonstrates that the organization meets the highest standards in abuse prevention. Sexual abuse is a preventable risk and together we can make a difference.
